Mediation

Writing

A blog post analyzing some of the timbral phenomena created by Eric Wubbels in his violin and piano duo the children of fire come looking for fire, written for the ACTOR project.

Radio

In 2020-2021, I worked as a radio host for Pulsar CISM 89,3 in Montreal where Maxime Daigneault, David Brongo, and I programmed two hours of experimental every Sunday night. My final project as host was to interview students involved in the Vivier InterUniversitaire’s year-long collaboration project. You can listen to a short excerpt of the discussion with Pat McMaster and Chloé Dumoulin from one of the episodes here:

The result of Pat and Chloé’s collaboration, a piece entitled Mills, can be found here.

Improvisation

Mandolin

In recent years, the mandolin has gradually taken the piano’s place as my instrument of choice when performing. Part of this shift occurred due to my years spent learning and playing Appalachian old-time fiddle music. Another part of this shift occurred as the mandolin became my preferred instrument for improvisation (with both acoustic and electroacoustic instruments). Here, you can listen to a short excerpt from a concert with the Sonology Electroacoustic Ensemble (SEE) run by Richard Barrett, and an acoustic improvisation with composer / violist Beatrice Ferreira:

Electronics

I collaborated with composer / violinist Leslee Smucker to create the max patch for her piece “Tableau Vivant” for bray harp, electronics, and transduced pedal harp. You can find out more about it here.

Arrangements

Liberto Medeiros - A Melodia Trás O Vento

My last musical project during my six years in Montreal was as arranger and musical director on an album of pensive and colorful film-score-like chamber pieces by musician / multi-instrumentalist / composer / artisanal framer Liberto Medeiros. The creative process for this project involved receiving recordings and notated sketches of piano improvisations by Liberto and making arrangements for chamber ensemble or solo instruments. The musicians on the album were:

Jeanne-Sophie Baron, Jana Kaminsky | violin

Beatrice Ferreira | viola

Braden McConnell | cello

Benjamin Bertin, Paul Çelebi | piano

Alex Huyghebaert | flute

Ludovik Lesage-Hinse | clarinet

Carolina Rodríguez Escobar | sound engineer (recording, mixing, mastering)

This album was recorded in June 2021 at Saint George’s Church in downtown Montreal. It is available for streaming on YouTube and Spotify.
